John Earl Collection
Biography of John Earl FSA MRICS FRSA IHBC
John Earl is a building surveyor and theatre historian. Since 1956 he has specialised in various aspects of building conservation, ranging from physical care and restoration to statutory control, recording and the formulation of planning policies. For many years Earl was employed by London County Council (LCC) and Greater London Council (GLC) Historic Buildings Division. From 1986 to 1995 he was Director of the Theatres Trust, the national statutory body charged with the protection of theatres. Since 1996 he has been a freelance consultant, and has prepared conservation plans for a number of historically significant theatres, including Hackney Empire and Wilton's Music Hall.
