Biography of Murray Melvin
Murray Melvin is an actor and Director. The current Company Secretary of the Board of Directors at the Theatre Royal Stratford East. He was a founder member of The Actors Centre and its Chairman for four years. He is also the Theatre Royal's voluntary Archivist, and is responsible for the preservation and listing of the theatre's archive collections. Murray Melvin's association with Stratford East dates back to 1957, when he joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop Company as a student. He appeared in the original productions of 'A Taste of Honey' by Shelagh Delaney (1958) 'The Hostage', by Brendan Behan (1958) 'Sparrers Can't Sing' by Stephen Lewis (1961), and the company’s first World War musical 'Oh! What a Lovely War' (1963). Murray Melvin left Stratford East in the mid-1960s, appearing in a plethora of theatrical productions, television and films including 'Alfie' (1966), 'The Devils' (1971), 'Barry Lyndon' (1975), 'Sparrers Can't Sing' (1963), and 'The Phantom of the Opera' (2004). He last appeared on television in the Torchwood series.
